From the Federal Highway Administration:
It’s Throwback Thursday! 1915 - Mitchell Point Tunnel opened on the Columbia River Highway in Oregon. The tunnel closed in 1953 when a new two-lane water-level route along the river bypassed the old road. The tunnel was then leveled by explosives and machinery in 1966 to make room for a four-lane freeway configuration.
