INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A worker for the Missouri Department of Transportation was badly injured following a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver.

MODOT says one of its night maintenance supervisors, Alfred Battle, was driving on westbound Interstate 70 at Phelps Road when the driver crashed head-on into his pickup.

Vertical-lift Railroad Bridge

#OTD: In 1933, construction began on the railroad bridge over New England District's Cape Cod Canal. Constructed close to the western end of the canal, the vertical-lift bridge has a 544-foot horizontal span, at the time of its construction the longest lift span in the world, supported by towers 210 feet high.

The span is normally kept in the raised position, 135 feet above mean high water. Almost exactly two years later, the first train rolled across it on December 29, 1935.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The mix of freezing temperatures, rain and runoff created dangerous driving conditions for drivers across the metro on Tuesday.

Around 5:45 a.m. westbound I-435 closed at I-35 inside of the Johnson County Gateway Project due to icy conditions. The highway reopened shortly before 7 a.m. after KDot crews were able to treat the ice.
