The Carrollton Viaduct

From the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters:

#OTD: In 1829, the world's first stone masonry railroad bridge -- the Carrollton Viaduct -- was completed in Baltimore.

The bridge is named for Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence and who had been present on July 4, 1828 to help break ground for the project. Originally built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad with good, strong Maryland granite, the bridge is still in active use carrying loads well in excess of the early B&O trains.

The bridge became a National Historic Landmark in 1971, and the American Society of Civil Engineers named it a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1982.

Constructed close to the western end of the canal, the vertical-lift bridge has a 544-foot horizontal span, at the time of its construction the longest lift span in the world, supported by towers 210 feet high.

The span is normally kept in the raised position, 135 feet above mean high water. Almost exactly two years later, the first train rolled across it on December 29, 1935.

I-95 shutdown: There had to be a better way to do this | Miami Herald

A double murder along Interstate 95 early Monday left two men dead and two families grieving, all the result of an apparent wild car-to-car shootout — with AK-47s — on an entrance ramp at Northwest 95th Street.
That was the crime, but thousands of motorists bore the brunt of the punishment. Miami-Dade police closed down a portion of the interstate to gather crime-scene evidence — and it remained shut for 10 hours — primarily the southbound lanes — from 4:30 a.m. until around 2:30 p.m. That’s longer than an average workday; longer than it takes to fly to Europe or watch five movies.

From Union Pacific:

Union Pacific Kinney County Railport Announces Grand Opening

SPRING, TEXAS, NOVEMBER 03, 2015
Union Pacific Railroad will host a ribbon cutting ceremony November 3, 2015, for its new Union Pacific Kinney County Railport in Kinney County, Texas.  The mayors of Brackettville, Del Rio and Eagle Pass will join members of the Kinney County Commissioner's Court, representatives from area lawmakers' offices, and executives from Union Pacific to celebrate the new railport and tour the grounds.
The $40 million facility is located between Eagle Pass and Brackettville covering 100 acres with space to expand up to 470 acres. It will provide cleaning and repair services for boxcars carrying packaged beer from Union Pacific customers along the border. At full operation, the facility will count over 100 employees, filling positions such as supervisors, car men, laborers and support personnel.
The Union Pacific Kinney County Railport will clean and prepare rail cars to meet food-grade guidelines so they are ready to be loaded by customers in Mexico and return to the United States with product for distribution. This will improve operational efficiency and network fluidity which should help alleviate congestion that causes stopped or slow trains. As a result, drivers in the area may see fewer blocked crossings and have their wait times at those crossings reduced.
"This new railport is strategically located to support our growing import beer business," said Jason Hess, vice president - Agricultural Products. "The Eagle Pass gateway will become a pipeline for crossing millions of cases of beer annually."
"We appreciate the support from our regional partners in bringing this facility on line," said Ivan Jaime, director - Public Affairs. "This is a great example of economic development and job creation."

Your Life is Worth the Wait: Union Pacific Launches Social Media Safety Campaign

From Union Pacific:

Your Life is Worth the Wait: Union Pacific Launches Social Media Safety Campaign

OMAHA, NEBRASKA, OCTOBER 12, 2015
It sounds simple. When railroad crossing arms are down or the warning lights are flashing, drivers and pedestrians must wait for the passing train. But last year, Federal Railroad Administration statistics reveal 915 people nationwide were killed or injured trespassing on railroad property.
Union Pacific Railroad this week launched a new campaign exclusively on social media, urging drivers and pedestrians to think about their personal safety first and wait at grade crossings. New videos depict different scenarios in which a jogger, young couple and father and son are stopped, waiting for a train to pass. When the arms lift, each proceeds safely toward a spectacular future.
"Our message is straightforward — Your Life is Worth the Wait," said Scott Moore, Union Pacific senior vice president — Corporate Relations. "Union Pacific trains operate in more than 7,300 communities; too often our employees see drivers or pedestrians sneak around the gates. Even after applying the emergency brakes, it can take a mile for a train to stop; the risk is never worth it."
To watch campaign videos and share this important safety reminder, visit up.com.
This is Union Pacific's second safety campaign launched exclusively on social media this year. The first, addressed high school photography on railroad tracks.

50-year-old Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel was an ‘engineering wonder’ - The Washington Post

Chances are good that you will ride across a big bridge this summer. It will swoop up and over a large body of water, giving you great views of the sky overhead and small-looking ships below. You may also ride through a tunnel under a body of water, where it will be noisy and dark. Rarely are these two engineering feats combined.
But about three hours from Washington, you can ride on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which turned 50 years old this year.

Union Pacific Railroad Invests $13.5 Million to Strengthen Wyoming's Transportation Infrastructure

From Union Pacific:

Union Pacific Railroad Invests $13.5 Million to Strengthen Wyoming's Transportation Infrastructure

Project Funded by Private Investment, Not Taxpayer Dollars

OMAHA, NEB., AUGUST 03, 2015
Union Pacific Railroad will strengthen Wyoming's transportation infrastructure investing $13.5 million in the rail line between Laramie and near Hanna. The project, funded entirely by Union Pacific without taxpayer dollars, began July 16 and is scheduled to be completed by mid-September.
The railroad will replace 74,000 railroad ties, install 23,000 tons of rock ballast and replace five miles of rail in various curves. In addition, crews will repair the surfaces at 21 road crossings. The project is one of nearly 1,500 Union Pacific will complete across its 32,000-mile network this year to help improve train operating efficiency, reduce motorist wait times at crossings and enhance safety.
"Union Pacific helps businesses connect with consumers, suppliers and markets across the nation and around the world," said Donna Kush, Union Pacific vice president - Public Affairs, Northern Region. "In addition to helping move our customers' goods safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and promoting economic expansion."
The railroad plans to invest more than $51.5 million in 2015 to improve Wyoming's transportation infrastructure. Union Pacific's planned investment covers a range of initiatives: nearly $48 million to maintain railroad track, $3 million to enhance signal systems and nearly $700,000 to maintain or replace bridges in the state.
Union Pacific plans to spend $4.2 billion across its network this year, following investments totaling more than $31 billion from 2005-2014. These investments contributed to a 38 percent decrease in derailments over the last 10 years.
